Print this Biography

Nartangpa Tsultrim Gyeltsen 13th cent.

Name Variants: Tsulgyelwa; Tsultrim Gyeltsen

Nartangpa Tsultrim Gyeltsen (snar thang pa tshul khrims rgyal mtshan) was a thirteenth century Sakya master. The Gyude Kuntu (rgyud sde kun btus) lists him in a lineage of the Dakarnava tantra, which is depicted in the painting from which the image here is drawn. Judging by his epithet "Nartangpa" he was associated with the Kadam Nartang Monastery. He was also said to be a disciple of Nartangpa Bakton Zhonnu Tsultrim (snar thang pa bag ston gzhon nu tshul khrims, d.u.), from whom he received the Dakarnava, and several other Sakya lamas, including Zhonnu Tsultrim (gzhon nu tshul khrims, d.u.), a Prajnaparamita master, and Konchok Gyeltsen (dkon mchog rgyal mtshan, d.u.).

Among his numerous students were the Lamdre masters Sonam Gyeltsen (bsod nams rgyal mtshan, 1313-1375) and his disciple Pelden Tsultrim (dpal ldan tshul khrims, 1333-1399). He passed the Dakarnava on to Lama Ngawang Drakpa (bla ma ngag dbang grags pa, d.u.)
