Trichen 58 Ngawang Chodrak (Feb. 06) Trichen Ngawang Chodrak was a Gelug lama from Amdo who served as the Fifty-eighth Ganden Tripa from 1764 to 1770. He was educated in Jakhyung Monastery in Kham, and Sera and Gyume monasteries in Lhasa and later served as the head of education and then abbot of Gyume Monastery followed by abbot of Ganden Jangtse. He also served as the tutor to the Eighth Dalai Lama and assisted in his ordination ceremony. During his tenure on the Golden Throne he built two life-sized statues of Tsongkhapa and the Buddha. The former was installed in Ganden Monastery but the latter was presented to Jakhyung Monastery. | |
Trichen 63 Lobzang Khechok (Feb. 05) Trichen Lobzang Khechok was a Gelug lama and scholar who served as the Sixty-third Ganden Tripa for a short term of only six months in 1792, passing away while in office. Born in Penyul, he entered the monkhood against the wishes of his family, joining Serame and later Gyuto College where he served as their chant leader and then abbot. Subsequently he served as the abbot and then Sharpa Choje at Ganden Shartse from where he ascended to the Golden Throne of Ganden. | |
Lowo Khenchen Sonam Lhundrub (Feb. 06) Lowo Khenchen Sonam Lhundrub (1456-1532) was a member of the ruling house of Lo Montang; like his his family he was a devotee of Ngorchen Kunga Zangpo and his disciples. He twice traveled in Tsang, visiting Nedong, Sakya and Ngor. A great commentator of the works of Sakya Pandita, he was later considered to be his reincarnation. |
